New equipment to start the year off right!

Oh boy! I just love new equipment, especially when it's so much better then the last set up I had. After a long drawn out wait, partially due to the recent snowfall, I'm back up and running again and so happy with the choices I made. I use to own an all-in-one fax, printer, scanner by HP, but after many frustrations associated with it I finally bought these two separate pieces. The Epson Stylus Photo 1400 printer and the Epson V600 scanner.

I'm a happy camper! But really, I hate camping. ;-(

Mushroom Calligram for my friend Machel Spence

For my latest calligram I chose to do this mushroom illustration which was inspired by my friend Machel. Machel Spence is a macro photographer living in Seattle and also happens to be my neighbor. Her specialty is taking beautiful close up shots of mushroom, fungi, small animals, and other beauties that most of us don't notice on the forest floor.

Surrogacy Clinic Commissioned Calligram

This commissioned calligram design will be used in a surrogacy clinic in California as a gift to each surrogate mother and patient that comes through their office. I was thrilled to create this piece in particular because of the wonderful gift that surrogate mothers offer "families in the making" that need them to carry their baby to term.

I'm working from a new and more comfortable place in my house now rather then standing at my old drawing table. I think I can even see the difference in my letters!

Just this evening I re-opened my Etsy shop, CalligramORama, after deciding to close on December 9th due to dwindling supplies and long lines at the post office. As soon as I get my son back to school next week it will be back to the drawing board with brand new designs. Here are some ideas I have brewing and anxious to get started on them:

Surf board, Bichon, West Highland Terrier, Banjo, Mushroom, Frank Zappa, Afro Woman, Pug, Corgi, etc...

This week I took a small group of "tweens" downtown Seattle on the bus. My son and three of his friends did everything from combing the Public Market for gifts for parents, enjoying pizza at Post Alley Pizza, and riding this great Christmas carousel that comes to Westlake Center every holiday season. I was wiped out by the time we arrived back home. But in a good way of course.

That's my son in the green hat hiding his face from my camera. After their carousel ride they enjoyed fresh warm mini donuts from a vendor nearby. I especially enjoyed this trip to town this year because it is most likely one of the last trips with kids this age. You know how kids get when they become teens. They rarely want to do anything with their parents. So, "relish it while you can," is my motto!

Tradition is what you make it

This is a really silly picture of my oldest daughter and youngest son taken last year at Christmas time. 2010 was the first year we began a new tradition in our family. We now enjoy a Christmas brunch at my daughter Amy's house complete with fancy pastry, fancy eggs, fancy potatoes, and all the fancy trimmings. Sounds fancy, doesn't it? And did I forget to mention the gift exchanges?

As times change, and children grow, I believe that some of the old traditions need to transform to accommodate or "better fit" the needs of the family members. The best part of this new brunch tradition is that I no longer have to cook a large Christmas dinner all by myself and entertain til exhaustion! I love this new low key plan which is so much less stress. I think it's important each year to assess the past year and see what sort of changes can be made to make your life easier, better, or more fulfilling.

What sort of traditions do you have in your families? Have they been carried on from your childhood? Or, are they new traditions you have tailored yourself to fit the times?

I'm hoping everyone has a wonderful, warm, happy and "tailor made" Holiday!

Just wanted to say thank you to all my Etsy customers who chose my shop to make their holiday purchases this year! As the season approached I was guessing that my sales would double from last year based on more calligrams in my collection. But I was totally unprepared for sales to triple! I'm so very thankful for this successful shopping season and I have reached my goals to purchase the necessary equipment to move on to my next venture. T-shirts!

As I am now on a holiday break, enjoying time with my family, my Etsy shop will reopen after December 26th and I'll be once again ready to tackle my growing calligram "to do" list.

What are your New Year goals?

Mermaid Calligram for Simone

I've always loved mermaids and I've had the idea for one on my "to do" list for several months. Recently though I was commissioned to create this one for a family to hang in their vacation home. It was a pleasure creating this as a keepsake. I'll still work toward including a mermaid calligram to my retail collection on Etsy in the near future. She will be a different shape then this one of course. And now I must carefully package her up to ship her to her new home. She's not traveling over seas....just to the east coast. I hope she doesn't dry up before she gets there!

I am dreaming and working toward printing my calligrams onto t-shirts one day very soon, and I sure love the looks of this work space. This next February I am starting a class at the Pratt Art Institute so I can learn the process of screen printing. Boy, what I would give to have a work area like in the photo, but I have a strong feeling my operation will be much smaller then the commercial space in the scene above. I am going to visualize this however because I have been raised to believe that whatever we can imagine, whatever we can dream, can be! I just have to get my husband to sell the 5 motorcycles taking up all the space in the garage.

Oh, and by the way.....consider this my Christmas list: anything from the photo above. I'll figure out where to put everything once I get the stuff.

These will be perfect for my next holiday art bazaar. It's going to be held in a rock n' roll bar and they make some of the best cocktails in town! I just couldn't help myself!

Cream Soda and Young Man James Brewery

What would a beer tasting be without soda pop for the kids? My son and his dad made some cream soda this week to go along with the cream stout brewed last week, so of course I had to seize the opportunity in making the label. Inspired by my son and his gas mask which he loves to wear. This cream soda will fill you with fizz! And probably gas too...

Like father, like son! I just like the art.

Another blog which I love following is Old Paper Art. Mail art is a lost art form, or maybe better termed as a rare art form. Mr Cachet shows us envelopes he has adorned with his art spanning many years, over 50 I believe! I am so impressed not only with the history and the stories related to his well preserved collection but his love for correspondence in general as well.

On my walk back from the post office yesterday I was inspired to create him an envelope calligram of sorts. I'm really starting to enjoy these tailored made calligram designs. Why do I do it you may ask?

If I was an abstract painter

I love to follow a blog in particular called eSynergy. Brenda is an abstract painter and her work is much like what I imagine myself painting if I were to develop those skills. Her colors and shapes speak my language and she often has interesting and inspiring articles to read on her blog as well.

As we are all thankful for our blog readers and followers I decided to create this calligram especially for Brenda using a list of words she sent me which she feels describe her character. I really enjoyed doing it and think I'll eventually make one for myself as well!

So, if you ever start to feel that you are sitting in your little corner of the world blogging away and wondering if it matters......feel confident that in some quiet way you are probably inspiring someone or fulfilling the artistic life that someone would choose as an alternative to theirs.

Customized calligrams make great gifts!

Here's a custom word art calligram of a Beechcraft Baron airplane. It was made for the father of the woman who purchased it. I think it would be pretty exciting to open a gift that someone had made especially for me with words pertaining to my interest.

I'm trying to think of just what my image would be and what words I would use to fill it up if I were to make one suited to my interest or passion. Maybe a hand holding a pen or something along that idea.

What image would you choose for yourself? What would some of the words be that would fill up that design?

My husband Russ recently started brewing beer for the first time! He started a cream stout a week ago which takes about a month to complete. Is there a better way to dabble in my design enthusiasm then to create the label? I think not!

And yes, that's our first born on the label. He's not going to be very happy about that! I'll let you know in early December how the stout actually tasted. They say the first one isn't always so good. Maybe we'll taste some beginner's luck!

Woke up this morning with the idea for a song. Right now my guitar is downstairs and there are two teenage boys sleeping, otherwise I'd sing it for you. ;-) This song was inspired by my recent road trip around Eastern Oregon and Central Washington. The beauty still haunts me.

The Menorah candelabrum or Hanukkiyah, is used in the Jewish culture during Hanukkah, December 21-28. In honoring each of the 8 days during Hanukkah candles are lit for several hours and often the Menorah is rested in a window sill so that those who pass by can be reminded of this holy time. The 9th candle, or the taller one in the middle above the others is called a Shamash. It is the "helper candle," the one used to light the others.

Once in a while I just have to streeeeetch my creativity to experience something new. The computer is a great tool to experiment and create in a way you may not have thought of before. And where your self portrait is concerned, you have free liberties to do whatever you want! Including removing age lines and under eye bags!

If you've never experimented with your own face but are dying to try it, without a scalpel of course, start dabbling with your photo editor software and take it just a bit farther then you've used it before. Free yourself, free art!

Did you know the Eiffel Tower houses 20,000 light bulbs? That's a lot of sparkle! I've never been to the tower as a tourist officially, but I have seen it from an airplane on my way to Barcelona. I remember the weather being foggy and somewhat gray. From the airplane window I could see the Eiffel Tower shooting up though the morning mist. It looked huge and a little out of place in a way. Someday I'll return and visit the tower from the ground. Once they lower the airfare and shorten the time it takes to get there. ;-)

Home, home on the Grange

Over the past 5 days I was taking a much needed road trip around our great Northwest. The best accommodations of all was having the opportunity to stay in this old grange built back in 1902 in Coulee City, Wa. Back in the mid 1920's this building was the last standing structure after a fire that burned up most of St. Andrews street. This property was recently purchased by a friend for a mere 20,000.00. The property taxes are only 120.00 a year!

On approaching this beautiful old structure it looks like a building in need of much work and restoration. But, tucked inside this cozy home are all the modern amenities you would ever need...well, almost everything. And comparing it to your standard hotel on the side of the road, I'd much rather take this experience with me back home. In fact, I'm a little inspired to sell my house and move to the country!

As I gaze out my window this morning from my own home in this big city, just beyond the blaring view of the neighbors metal siding, I can see just a bit of green foliage and blue sky. A big difference from yesterday mornings first sun streaming through 100 year old windows offering a glistening view of swaying fields of gold.

Teddy Calligram for China

I was excited to share this photo of a client showing off the image I created for a fund raiser to help with costs and goals for children in orphanages in China. As I don't often have the enjoyment of actually seeing my client's faces I was thrilled to be sent this photograph. I was told that the teddy calligram has raised hundreds of dollars towards her goal. It's fulfilling to know that many children in China will benefit from the joint efforts of several dedicated people.

Structure vs Chaos

Today's post has more to do with my own inner turmoil then it does the photo above. I thought it would be fun to show you my son's artwork and writing though, instead of another Etsy treasury. ;-) He has been drawing and writing stories since before he could write...or draw as a matter of fact. I'm always thrilled when he comes out of his room with a finished piece like this one. Creative time alone like that is so fulfilling.If you'd like to see more of his work go to The Arcanite Studios. As for me, and as our summer comes to an end, I ponder over how unproductive I am during these warmer months. My drawing table is stacked high with bills, to-do lists, photographs, and sticky notes. I'm aware that I produce and create so much more when my days are structured and busy. September is just around the corner and the creative energy is building in my blood. I do miss my pens!

Do you work better in unstructured environments? Or like myself, do you find structure and a busier schedule the more productive engine driving you?

Etsy treasuries are a great way to showcase several artists at one time and some treasury creators also think up some pretty clever themes. I have yet to create a treasury but am always thrilled to find one of my calligrams featured in one. This one celebrates those sweet little deer-like pets, the chihuahua. However, on closer inspection of this treasury I noticed something that doesn't quite fit. Can you find that item?

I can't believe today marks the half way point of our last summer month. We've hardly had any weather over 72 degrees! It's back to the drawing board soon, and back to school for my soon to be 8th grade son.

My calligram "to do" list is stacking up as August will soon be coming to a close. We've had a great summer topped off with our recent vacation on Vancouver Island.

I'm looking forward to my son returning to school as I will be also returning to my drawing table. I have over 15 new calligram designs about to be created and I'm anxious to have that time and space to start creating again.

As I loaded this photo from our recent vacation I realized my 13 year old son is nearly as big as his 6'2 dad! Soon to be an 8th grader, my youngest son is already 5'9 and will quickly be towering over me. I'll need to start thinking about some other form of discipline to use other then intimidation. ;-)

Art Lives Forever!

If you look closely you can make out a signature in pencil with the year 1960. This is a pastel still life my mother, Bonnie Allen, did the year I was born. It wasn't always in our family, but I'd love to share the special story of how this framed still life found its way into my hands after 30 years.

In 1961, about a year after this still life was created, it was given as a gift to a friend of my mothers who at the time lived in the Seattle area. This little painting hung on a wall in the friend's kitchen for over 28 years. Eventually my mother's friend moved away to a town about 40 miles from her house in Seattle and took this painting with her.

The most amazing part of the story enfolded in the year 1991 (30 years after the painting was finished). I happen to be participating in an art fair selling my calligraphy prints unknowingly in the same town my mother's friend moved to. During a break I took a walk around the block just to get some exercise and stretch my legs. I saw the cutest little antique shop and wandered in. Between you and me the only reason I entered the shop was to ask to use the restroom. ;-) The owner was on the phone so I pretended to look busy. The very first thing I noticed was a painting hanging low on the wall behind the rungs of a chair. It was my mother's painting! Still in the original frame and mat my mother cut herself. Guess my mother's friend sold it at a yard sale, not so nice.....The fact that I retrieved it, super nice!

If that isn't enough of an amazing tale, wait until you hear the rest of it! I purchased it right away, the woman still on the phone, and couldn't wait to get it home and call my mom. I described the piece to her but she just couldn't believe it. I assured her that I knew her signature and style of art she was doing back then as we had others from this same era. The most surprising fact was when she reminded me that the very house this painting sat in for over 28 years was exactly across the street from where I was living at the time I found it!

So, if you ever find yourself doubting the importance, immortality, or energy in your art, writings, or simply your personal legacy, keep in mind this special little painting that left a family so long ago. Traveling over 80 miles and 30 years, finding its way back to me. If for no other reason then simply luck, or possibly as a reassuring hand in inspiration, I will never stop believing in the miracle and powers that lie just beyond our understanding. I hope you believe too.

We recently took care of a friend's sweet little dog, Rita. Every time I went into the kitchen she'd spy on me from the other side of the bamboo door curtain we've hung to keep out the flies. I couldn't help but remember the Martin Denny albums my dad had in his record collection. I just had to re-create the cover with Rita's cute face and seductive eyes!

I'm holding off revealing this to Rita's owner as her birthday is coming up soon and I'm going to have it printed and framed as a surprise. I'd love to be able to capture this same photograph with my own dog but he's much more bold when I'm cooking in the kitchen. He'd rather stand closer to my feet!

While enjoying the local street fair in Seattle today I met artist Jimmy Gersen and couldn't resist purchasing one of his prints. I just love meeting new local artists and this next Thursday he'll be painting live during the West Seattle Art Walk at Angelina's. Can't wait to go and watch him at work!

World's Fastest Couch Potato

From the reading I did to prepare for this Greyhound calligram these mild mannered canines are quite the ideal pet, especially if you live in an apartment or condo. When these large sinewy dogs retire from their lives as track racers they have a bit of a hard time transitioning from cage to home. But once they're rested and bonded with their human owners their favorite spot I'm told is on a nice cushy couch or chair. And, if it's in front of a fireplace even better!

Yesterday was "Art Car Day" at a local watering hole. Cars like these lined up in a tiny parking lot near my home so admirers could have a look and take a few pictures. I believe the collection of artsy cars were part of the Fremont Fair early the same day. This must have been a brief stop on their way home or towards another "show and shine" destination.

I personally drive a car much like the Miata shown above with the optical illusion graphics. I'm tempted, and if I was going to do something like this of course it would have to be in the form of a calligram. That's it! A three dimensional calligram! I better get busy!

There are lots of people out there making claims to how scary clowns are, but I certainly don't agree with them. Especially the "tragic figure" clowns such as Emmett Kelly. They are both sweet and sad, not at all creepy in my opinion.

My first memory of clowns and the circus was when my dad use to take me to the Boeing Circus back in the 60's. It was around Christmas time and I can remember leaving Seattle Center after the show with a large plastic candy cane stuffed with candy. The clowns were the best part of the show in my opinion. They fascinated me with their stunts and mishaps.

This clown calligram was made especially for a high school friend of mine. Her father is a Shriner clown and my friend thought this would make a great Father's Day gift. I'm happy to add it to my collection and it will soon be listed in my Etsy shop!

I had the pleasure this week creating this custom typography calligram for a family in Austin, Texas. A wonderful customer contacted me and told me her young son was obsessed with the drums and thought this image containing words relating to each family member would be a perfect family heirloom. As I was filling in the words I could feel the energy and rhythm of this family, the music they create together and the history that only a family can build over time. It truly made me appreciate the music my family has created together over the years. At times, a little bit heavy or loud. Sometimes sad. But most certainly always uniquely beautiful.

Yesterday I asked my husband if he'd take a few shots with the camera while I worked on a calligram. I wanted to add a personal touch to my Etsy shop by adding a few photos of myself working. I discovered that while shopping on Etsy for myself I enjoy buying from the sellers where I can actually see who they are rather then just an avatar or image of what they sell. Other then a bad hair day, I think this one turned out okay.

So, my question of "do you commute or work from home" is answered in this photo. I do work from home, but when I have to commute or run errands look how close my car sits to my desk! I should win a prize for the shortest distance!

A wonderful Etsy customer who is planning a trip to China to bring supplies to several orphanages asked if I would be interested in designing a teddy bear calligram to benefit the children there. I was so happy to do this as I always feel so honored when I am asked to do custom work. Especially for a cause such as benefiting those less fortunate then myself.

I wish her luck and success with her future trip. Most of all, my wish for the precious children in orphanages all over the world, is to know and feel that they are loved.

Friends and the Backyard BBQ

This last Friday was the first day since September that it was almost warm enough to eat outside. So we did anyway! As you can see, some of us have our jackets on and we did resume the gathering inside shortly after this photo was taken.

So, what was on the menu? Rotisserie pork shoulder, potatoes ole, tomato salad w/ mozzarella, hot links, corn bread, and cookies. I bought ice cream sandwiches but it just felt a little too cold this time for that. We won't let them go to waste though.

Here's to more backyard BBQ's and lots more sunshine! Thanks friends for helping us start the season up right!

Twin Engine Piper Aztec F Custom Typography Calligram

This custom airplane typography calligram is my third commissioned piece for the month of May. This one is for a woman's father-in-law as a Father's Day present. It is filled with words having to do with the pilot's flight career in the Air-Force and details about the plane he owned, a twin engine Piper Aztec F. It even contains the birth dates of his two children and his wife's name.

I'm thrilled with the idea of my calligrams being wrapped up special and given to loved ones as personalized gifts. I would really love to be there for every single commissioned piece I have made as it is being unwrapped. As a special surprise for this repeat customer I have included in the package a blank greeting card with this image on the front framed nicely with little black photo corners. It can be used as the Father's Day card or saved to send to someone else.

When this calligram was complete and I went to my computer to let the buyer know it was ready to ship I received a fourth commission request. A drum set for a four year old! His mother tells me her son is completely obsessed with drums. Can't wait to get started!

Back in about 1973 my sister dated a guy who had a 1965 Mustang convertible. If we were really nice to him he'd take us for rides. The best ride of all was on the nights that the cool people went "cruising" in a neighboring town. Eventually though, the signs went up and it became illegal to cruise. Those were some amazing and eye opening times for sure! Some of those good times are unfortunately what creates new stricter rules. So, I'd like to personally apologize to the generation of kids who came up behind mine. But, I do know they made a few changes around town themselves. ;-)

Did you know that New York's "Goddess of Freedom" stands 111 ft and 1 inch tall? I certainly didn't. I learned a lot by researching words for this calligram. There have been so many interesting photos taken of Lady Liberty over the years. About 10 years before she was fully dedicated on October 28, 1886 her head was displayed in Paris during their World's Fair in 1878. And, in case you can't read the tiny numbers near the bottom, she weighs a mere 450,000 lbs!

Now that's one "colossal neoclassical sculpture!"

Chrysler Building New York City: Custom Typography Calligram

This custom typography calligram or calligraphy art illustration of the Chrysler Building in New York is a commissioned piece purchased through my Etsy shop. It is a gift for the purchaser's husband as he is a huge fan of NY and the building is his favorite. I'd love to see his reaction to the surprise! The buyer gave me a small list of pertinent words she wanted me to use and the rest is filled with a variety of words related to the building itself and New York City.

Some interesting facts I learned about the building is that is has 32 elevators, several beautiful ceiling murals, was once the tallest building in New York, contains gargoyles on the outside designed like the Chrysler automobile emblems, and is 1,047 ft tall.

My husband and I plan to visit NY one of these days. I'm sure this Art Deco skyscraper will be on my list to visit!

Now, it's back to the drawing board for the 65th calligram to add to my shop. Maybe a 1964 Mustang convertible........?

My mother has always been an artist as long as I can remember. She may not have found time to paint as often as she would have liked to while raising her three girls, but her creative spirit has always been prevalent to me in the way she views the world, finds humor in situations and can point out the many colors in nature even on a cloudy day.

Her home is filled with her watercolor paintings, many of which I consider masterpieces. A few of those I have been lucky enough to add to my own art collection. I even found a pastel still life she made in 1960 while combing a local antique store and it hangs in my kitchen today.

I do have to share a little personal story about coffee. In 2005 I had an opportunity to travel to Barcelona with a friend. Now, I've always thought of this friend as a bit of a "coffee snob." In a warm hearted way of course. But, while traveling through Europe for the first time my taste for the fine brewed or pressed bean developed so easily I was never the same after I returned home. I just loved the way I was served clear glass tumblers with the cream still swirling in the fresh hot espresso! Since then I have purchased my own espresso machine and have a special way I like to serve myself and my husband this delicious drink. To tell you the truth, I've become a bit of a "coffee snob" myself since that trip. It's an indulgence in which I have no remorse, unless I've had a cup after 5:00pm.

The VW Beetle calligram is officially #60 in my Etsy shop today! I couldn't pass up the opportunity to add this little cultural icon of a car to my collection while also reminiscing my own youth. My first car, as seen in this old photo from 1979, was a 1973 baby blue Volkswagen Beetle. I was only 19 in this photo, check out the bell bottoms and clogs! Wow, I'm still wearing that combination today.

The Volkwagen Beetle was first assembled in Germany in the year 1938. It finally came to the US in 1947. The Beetle really gained its craze when the Beatles added an image of this unique car to their Abbey Road album cover in 1970.

Creating Calligrams as Therapy

It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon yesterday and a perfect day to spend creating calligrams in a group setting while getting to know others in a fun and relaxing environment.

This photo was taken at an art workshop I led in creating calligram designs with the Plus One Foundation. The Plus One Foundation assists children and adults with a neurological injury, disorder, or disease to achieve goals, expand opportunities and 'feed the soul' through activities that offer education, rehabilitation and training. The class attendees seemed to enjoy the fellowship and the opportunity of learning a new form of art, while I was both blessed and inspired by them as well.

Feed the body food and drink, it will survive today. Feed the soul art and music,

I decided to show my very first calligram today because I have been pondering the meaning of the quote in the title of this post. As you can see, just over a year ago my calligrams were not quite what they are today. I had no idea that while I was making this scooter calligram I would be completing over 70 calligrams total over the next year or so. My goal for my Etsy shop collection is to have 100 by years end. But, whether I make that goal or not, I still find it entertaining to see the growth and change in my work. I can say, "Consistency is the DNA of Mastery." I wonder where that DNA will take me next!

Do you have a pleasant childhood memory involving a tree? Did you sit below in its shade while gazing up at the green canopy? Or, were you a climber, brave and strong?

I have a wonderful and "secret" memory involving a tree in my old neighborhood. It was a very tall pine and it stood on a small hillside at a church yard near my house. I climbed and climbed one day, keeping my body close to the center where the greatest support was. The thrill and the special time alone made it easy to forget the many scratches I was collecting on my small limbs.

When I finally sensed that I was high enough, I carefully peered through the bristly arms of the pine. Nobody else in the entire world could see me but I had the power to see it all! As I turned my glance toward my own home the front window revealed my mother standing in full view. Though she looked rather small I could see that she was wearing an apron and I guessed it was nearing dinner time soon. She seemed peaceful there as I secretly spied on her, but I also knew it was time to climb down. I never told my mother I climbed that tree, even though she asked at the dinner table what I had done that day. It was my "secret tree climb." The day that I felt Mother Nature wrapping her arms around my innocence and at the same time empowering me by my accomplishment.

Some of my great friends over at Oasis Gallery in Wallingford have started a non-profit organization for people with neurological disorders and those with challenges as a result of brain injury. It's called the Plus One Foundation. They have asked me to teach a short art therapy class in making calligrams to about 20 or so attendees. Each artist will have one-on-one assistance from a University of Washington Sorority Alumni.

Today I prepped a bit for the class. Everyone will have a choice of three calligrams to choose from. A tree, a sun, and the letters LOVE. I'm excited to work with this foundation and to see the results from this fun class. I'll keep you posted with pictures after April 23rd!

My newest friend Leanna at The Violet Reaction came to Seattle this weekend on the train from Oregon to attend a fashion show in Ballard at the New York Fashion Academy, which she will be applying to attend this fall. Since she'd never been to the John Fluevog shoe store, I thought that a visit to this unusual and fun shoe designer's shop in Seattle would be the perfect activity while she was here. As you can guess from the photos Leanna tried on quite a few! And being as young, tall, and stylish as she is, they all looked great on her.

I was tempted to try on a few myself, but I resisted and help her narrow down the perfect pair for herself! The winners were the ones just to the right of the yellow shoes above. Congratulation Leanna! You own your first pair of Fluevogs! I have a feeling it won't be your last.

Art Supply Review: Marker Paper vs Bristol

Since I recently bought an led light pad I also needed to change the paper I was using to create my calligrams. I was previously using drafting vellum, but now that I am able to illuminate my work area from underneath with the light pad, I no longer need to use transparent paper.

My first purchase was Bristol board. A heavy, semi smooth paper designed for ink illustrations, pencil drawings, and other materials. It is acid free and basically a good quality product I had used in the past for sketching. When I tried it out with my light pad I noticed right away that I didn't like the way my ink pens dragged across the paper, leaving a sort of "hairy" ending to my lines. The paper also seemed to soak up a lot of the ink. To my surprise, when I scanned the finished piece into my computer and did the necessary reducing color input in order to darken the black areas, the background grayed and I could see fibers in the paper within the digital image.

Well, if none of this makes sense I can understand. I know it sounds entirely confusing! I just spent all this time rambling on and all I really want to say is that the Artist's Marker Pad you see above in the photo is SO MUCH BETTER than Bristol!! It's also less expensive!

Chihuahuas always look like baby deer to me. So tiny and I love watching them prance around. They have a bit of a bad reputation with children as they can be moody and nervous around them. The research I read suggested they be adopted into homes without young children under the age of 14.

This brought back a rather unpleasant memory from my childhood. I was walking home from kindergarten and saw a cute little chihuahua standing at the top of his driveway. I thought he was so darn cute, I walked right up to him and pet him on the top of his head. He bit me!! I ran down the hill and cried all the way home. I can still remember my mother taking me to the doctor to have it cleaned. We even contacted the owner and let them know. But, looking back on the event I know it was really my own fault entering his property he was innocently guarding.

This little baby is my 57th calligram. And don't worry, this one won't bite.

When I looked up words for Martial Arts I had no idea there were so many forms and styles of this form of self discipline, and across so many countries too. This calligram was taken from the silhouette of Bruce Lee. And I used my new light pad and paper!

This baby "kicked" itself right into position #55 in my shop. I was so thrilled with my new materials I actually completed two new calligrams today. But, you'll have to come back tomorrow to see the next one. It was suggested to me by a good customer so I'm mailing her one for free!

A New Toy!

Meet my newest toy! An LED Light Pad! I bought this over the weekend and have been playing around with different paper and pen combinations to get the best original illustrations I can possibly get. Previously I had been using drafting vellum in order to create my calligrams. The problem I was having was when I'd scan the art the scan light would burn right through the ink and vellum which would produce a copy that showed every imperfection in my lines. I am now happy to say that my scanned copies are much better, and after talking to the great people at Daniel Smith Art Supplies I have learned to make some adjustments to my scanned copies in order to make even more improvements in their quality.

When I read up about these little guys before I started it just made me want one. But the Corgi mix I have at home would not want to share our attention! I was surprised to read that these dogs were previously bread to fight cause they are so sweet and fun loving. I love the part I read that explained how selectively they bark. Miles Dewey Davis III. May 26, 1926 ~ September 28, 1991. American jazz trumpeter, composer, and band leader. Miles was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. He was a Juilliard School of Music drop-out, but has won numerous Grammy Awards and too many to mention various other awards in his musical career. Many jazz artists have been inspired by him and many famous musicians rose to prominence as members of the Davis' ensembles. John Coltrane, Branford Marsalis, and Herbie Hancock to name a few.

Miles Davis' style of playing was known as Avant Garde Jazz, Jazz Fusion and Bebop Jazz. If you've ever listened to any of his music you're most likely aware of the uniqueness of his sound.

Buddha Calligram

This Buddha calligram or calligraphy is #52 in my Etsy shop. I think it will fit nicely into the spiritual/peace section.

When I was a kid growing up, we would often visit my aunt in Vancouver, BC. She had a long credenza in her main entry made of beautifully crafted and very smooth wood. A single Buddha head sat off to one side on this table and that was the only decoration in the rather large foyer. I really had no idea what the statue was about at that time and my knowledge hasn't really grown very much in the area of Buddhism now. But I do remember knowing that it was a spiritual icon, and along with the smell of burning incense, this was a very peaceful place to be. I still enjoy burning incense to this day and have been inspired by the sparse style with which my aunt decorated her home.

I close with a quote by Thich Nhat Hanh.

"People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a miracle. But I think the real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth. Every day we are engaged in a miracle which we don't even recognize: a blue sky, white clouds, green leaves, the black, curious eyes of a child -- our own two eyes. All is a miracle."

Prayer Carriers and the Beauty of Eagles!

I have been in awe of these beautiful creatures since I can remember. The way they soar, perch themselves so intelligently on the top branch of a tree, and that knowing look in their eyes. While doing research for this calligram I discovered some Native American spiritual beliefs I didn't know before. Many tribes believe that eagles are Prayer Carriers. Messengers taking our prayers and concerns before God for us.

Recently a friend of mine told me about a couple who raised an eagle from infant stage. They trained it to fly in sport stadiums during the National Anthem. When the song is finished it gently returns to its perch and the crowd is left in awe and amazement. I would love to see this in person. But my favorite view of these majestic creatures is watching several of them feeding along the river beds not to far from where I live. Amazing site!

I have renewed faith in our system and its people for bringing the eagle out of its endangered species status. And I still stop whatever I'm doing to watch these great birds soar over head. They are truly divine creatures!

I was always way too tall to wear high heeled shoes like these, but I've always loved them and wished that I could wear them without towering over all the boys. Even my Dansko clogs make me tower over many boys! In high school if there was a surgery you could get to shorten your legs, I would have paid all the money in my piggy bank for it! I even went so far as to buying Earth shoes....the ones where the heel is lower then the toe box. I was hoping they would make me shorter...;-)

I just love fresh wild caught Salmon! I think it's the meat of the gods! Since my oldest daughter started working for a local shipping company I've been able to purchase 25 lb boxes of this yummy stuff. My husband and I have found many creative ways to cook it and are always looking for more creative recipes. My favorite way I've eaten salmon is in a puff pastry with cream cheese filling and a raspberry drizzle over the outside. I have yet to find the actual recipe and the restaurant that use to serve this scrumptious dish is no longer in business.

If you have a great recipe for cooking salmon, let's hear about it!

Be Who You Are

While working through Julia Cameron's book, Walking in This World, I was hugely inspired to use this photo of my daughter taken on our recent trip to Anchorage. To me, this photo exudes such confidence and inner joy and parallels so nicely the chapter I am reading right now, "Discovering a Sense of Perspective."

I wish I had a photo like this of myself, but since I don't I'd like to share this one with you and include a wonderful quote I found in my reading today by Fanny Brice. It reads;

"Let the world know you as you are, not as you think you should be, because sooner or later, if you are posing, you will forget the pose, and then where are you?"

At this moment I say "YES" to my future, and let my boldness and enthusiasm show! After all, nobody else can do it quite like me. ;-)

Anchorage Vacation and the Norovirus

Back from vacation bringing home the worst souvenir you can imagine. The stomach flu! I didn't get out of bed for 4 days! The vacation itself was great, and if you've ever been to Anchorage during their Fur Rendezvous then you know how exciting this time is. There is among other things, a carnival, snow machine racing, parades, and the official pre line-up for the Iditarod races.

In the photo you can see my son and me poking our heads through one of the many ice sculptures in the town square. The ice was as smooth as silk and a total wonder on how they do these sculptures. But, all good things must end and now it's back to the drawing board!

A Childhood Dream

After working through a couple of chapters in Julia Cameron's book Walking in This World, I've spent some time thinking back over my life and pondering some of my childhood interests and dreams. The earliest memories I have creating or doing something I truly enjoyed were those sitting with magazines, scissors, and glue while making a floor plan of my dream home. I carefully filled each room with colors and fabric samples I would cut out of my mother's magazines.

I fascinated myself with all the choices of where to put windows, doorways, decks, etc...I even sketched the surrounding gardens to complete my dream property. I cut out fancy designs for curtains, bedding and even wall colors. When I was finished for the day everything was neatly tucked away into a binder which I kept safely in my room.

To make a long story short, I never went to college to become that Interior Designer I had wished to be so long ago. My father told me I should be a nurse instead, and that a more sensible choice would be the only tuition he'd be paying. Regardless of this letdown, I am happy to say I have had the pleasure many times over re-creating within my own walls. I have also had the joy of helping others decorate their personal spaces. Maybe this has brought me more joy then working in the field professionally would have. I like to think of it that way. ;-)

Oh, and that's not my living room up there....but I sure love it!

Wall Arrangements and Vacation Photos

Yesterday I finally printed and framed a few vacation photos from our trip to New Mexico last year. I had the idea for this wall in my dining room for almost a year now! I don't know if many of you have this same problem, but it doesn't seem to matter what kind of printer I have or how high quality the image is, I always get vertical lines in my photos. I also use high quality paper and don't have a problem printing my calligrams. I just can't seem to figure it out.

Well, anyway, back to the arrangement. My husband knows I have a hard time stopping when it comes to decorating and this wall was no exception. I had plenty of things to choose from as you can see. There are two 5x7's here, both churches in New Mexico. One 11x14 of a mural painting on the High Road to Taos, and countless crosses and other small doo dads. The plate was a gift from my mother-in-law. She has a second home in Panama where we also love to vacation. And check out that little fish! My hubby carved that recently, isn't it cool?

Lots of people suggest planning just how your wall will look. Have a particular plan, they say. But, I always just jump in and I think this is a great way to surprise yourself with the outcome. As long as you don't mind the nail holes. ;-)

From the author of The Artist's Way, Julia Cameron wrote Walking in This World, a sequel to her previous international best seller. It is a course in "discovering and recovering the creative self," including journal prompts and other fun exercises and personal challenges.

I have recently made the decision to begin the exciting journey of working through this book with a group of other readers both here on the internet and close to home with a few friends. If you'd like to join the internet group and be part of a community working through the pages of this great book you can go to this site and read up on how you can follow along. Journaling Saves has all the information you need to get started and stay inspired as we begin unfolding our creative awareness and possibility beginning March 1st.

One of the first exercises in chapter one is to create a list of 20 small creative actions you can take to get your creative juices inspired and flowing. I'm still working on my list of ideas but I thought it would be fun to share a few of them with you. In the course of following this book it is my goal to accomplish at least half of my list. Here's my work in progress:

1. Work on my poem/art journal. (I'll even share a few pages here!)
2. Create a Vision Board
3. Sit in silence more often
4. Send personal notes to friends via usps
5. Enjoy regular "artist dates."
6. Create more art just for fun, not just for Etsy. ;-)

New Art Purchase! Winter Storm by Lisa Chancellor

This weekend I bought a new painting for my living room at my favorite shop, Oasis Art Gallery. This abstract painting by Oregon artist Lisa Chancellor is called Winter Storm and is just perfect hanging above my fireplace.

One thing about buying a new piece of art, other than the emotional connection, is the cleaning frenzy it can inspire while making itself a special place in your home. After I removed everything from my mantel, dusting like crazy, I had to ask my hubby to help me hang this painting because our old lathe and plaster walls are not the easiest thing to hammer a nail into.

Fireplace mantels are not the easiest thing to decorate but are so much fun, especially when you can finally sit back and enjoy the finished arrangement. Needless to say, this little project ended up moving me around the entire living room with my Swiffer duster! Everything feels so much better when you buy art!

Native American Indian Chief Calligram

When I married into the Lummi Tribe I gained an enormous appreciation for Native arts, Native culture, and so much more. If you've been lucky enough to go to a Pow Wow or Native performance/celebration of any kind then you know the power this culture has to move you deep in your core. I believe it is because of the true spirit that touches those who can hear it.

This Indian Chief is filled with names of many different tribes. I added the pencil for shading and detail for his weathered face. I think this is one of my favorites and is #45 in my Etsy shop today. Only 55 more to go to reach my goal!

Happy Valentine's Day!

This is the love of my life and husband of 13 years, Russel James! To celebrate Valentine's Day today we are going to a local happy hour for appetizers and cocktails. After dinner I have a special dessert planned too. How does chocolate ganache cheesecake, strawberries, and whip cream sound? Mmmm, can't wait!! I didn't mention what we're having for dinner because it's only left over white bean chili and I didn't think it was worth mentioning...oops! I guess I did anyway. ;-D

Happy Valentine's Day Russ! I love you so much more then I can possibly show you in this one precious lifetime. I'd love to do it all over again with you if we have that choice another time around. ;-)

Second Portrait Calligram headed to Texas!

It always feels so good when a commissioned job is finished, especially when we're happy with the results! Can't wait to mail these out next week. I feel confident the daughters will love them. Too bad they won't be in time for Valentine's Day. If I hadn't battled the flu a few weeks ago I just may have finished them earlier.

Now, on to my main goal. I'm shooting for 100 calligrams in my Etsy shop by years end. That means approximately 1-2 per week added. I better get on it!

Portrait Calligrams

Two portrait calligrams were commissioned from a friend in Austin Texas. She asked me to do calligrams of her two daughters, Erin and Katie. This is the first one I just finished today. Both daughters are gorgeous and it's been a joy doing business with their mother who just so happens to have the same name as me! That's right, another Joni James and she's crazier then I am. ;-D I was browsing facebook one day and decided to see if there were any other Joni James' out there. Well, we've been talking ever since, and this June I'll have the thrill of actually meeting her!

Juxtapose Art Show: Calligram O Rama II

Sure had a great time at my art show this last Friday. I think about 30 or more people showed up. The sales weren't too shabby either!

This new cafe in Burien called Juxtapose, is the perfect venue for artists to display their work. I'm hoping this brand new cafe can prosper in this current economy and that people will visit this place and enjoy the great coffee she makes! Thanks to everyone that came out too. It was great to see so many high school friends after all these years.
